Virtual Tabletop Game Play and Design
for Diverse Participants and Purposes

An FDG 2021 Workshop

August 2, 2021

This hands-on workshop invites participants with diverse backgrounds and skills (e.g., technical experts, game designers, educators) to explore ways to make virtual tabletop game play, modding and design more integrated, accessible and adaptable to a variety of potential users and contexts. While several online platforms for playing and making virtual tabletop games exist, they require programming or other skills that present barriers to their use by a wide range of potential participants. The COVID pandemic made clear the need for more user-friendly platforms and tools that can be used for educational purposes as well as for research. While the workshop itself is not likely to yield a final solution to this problem, participants will begin to generate ideas and even prototypes that can be further developed beyond the workshop itself.
